Power of social media

Social media has today become part of our life. We use Whatsapp, YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn or many more such platforms to share, know or comment about variety of things that matter to us.

The social media has perhaps become more powerful than the conventional print or digital media. Today, many newspapers or TV channels are looking for news on social platforms. Journalists are regularly tracking what is becoming more viral on the social media platforms. Number of hits on Facebook or YouTube decide the value of the post. If this number goes beyond the threshold, it qualifies to be a breaking news !!

Common man has become a journalist today by means of video clips or photographs that he happens to record when he comes across anything un-usual or exciting around him. So much so, that the AAP Govt. in Delhi announced that a common man is their biggest strength. They announced that anyone who sees corruption happening around, just records it & sends it to the government & the government assures people, that they will book the culprits !

What makes some posts on the social media so popular & why the others are not even noticed? The answer is simple… Anything that touches your mind. Whether it is good or bad, both have a similar impact. It may be some act of humanity, someone may have helped some animal or a poor person. In calamity – someone might have worked hard for rescue or someone have had a big achievement in sports – what sticks is, something that touches our mind. That’s why a century scored by a seasoned cricket player doesn’t get much attention, but even a fifty scored by a youngster in his debut match does attract our attention.

We all saw how the Indian prime minister used Twitter in his campaign and is still using it for his brand promotion.

In short, Social Media is changing our life. It’s a tool given to us to raise our voice, raise our concerns, publicize our achievements or appreciate someone’s efforts. It was never so easy for a common man to do this !!
